Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are sending this email to make you aware of the May 18th release by Netflix of season 2 of

13 Reasons Why. The series revolves around a high school student, Clay Jensen, and his friend Hannah Baker, a girl who takes her own life after suffering a series of demoralizing circumstances brought on by select individuals at her school. A box of cassette tapes, recorded by Hannah before her suicide, details thirteen reasons why she ended her life. This trending series is raising concerns about the potential risk factors in students' lives, which can lead to unhealthy decisions and behaviors. Schools, parents, and the larger community share in the responsibility of keeping our young people safe.  Identifying, addressing, and regulating unhealthy actions and behaviors is part of the challenge.

The pre-teen and teen years are an anxious and disconcerting time for our young people as they deal with the difficulties of transitioning into adulthood.  With the impending release of this trending series, we are asking parents and guardians to be mindful of the need to be intentional about how you connect with your children and assist them in addressing these issues and the triggers that may elevate risk factors.

The National Association of School Psychologists created some exhaustive online resources on the upcoming release of 13 Reasons Why, which may prove helpful to you in your decision-making process and conversations with your child. We will make this link available on our website as well as in this letter.
